Tinnitus Symptoms

Types of noise in the ear

The sounds of tinnitus are an ear noise that no one around you hears because there is no external source or origin of ear sounds.  This ear noise is usually a buzzing or ringing sound, or less often a clicking or wind rushing sound that occurs in rhythm with the heartbeat. These sounds of tinnitus are sometimes accompanied by hearing loss and dizziness in a syndrome called Meniere's disease.Bottom of Form

There are several common sounds of tinnitus symptoms:

  • Tonal tinnitus is often called "ringing in the ears." This type of ear noise produces a continuous sound, like a single high musical note referreed to as persistent ear ringing.
  • Pulsatile tinnitus, in which the tinnitus sounds continuous or intermittent, and throb in time with the heartbeat.
  • Ear noises in which the tinnitus symptoms can be buzzing, roaring, whistling, or hissing.
  • Uncommon tinnitus, in which the ear noise problems are described as a beeping Morse code signal, or even a complex musical sound.
  • Even more uncommon is tinnitus noise experienced as a combination of different noises in your ears at the same time.
  • A rare type of tinnitus, called “objective tinnitus," is heard not only by the affected individual but also by others since the cause of ear noise is not within the ear but external to the ear.
