GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is one of only four amino acids to function as a neurotransmitter in the brain. However, GABA acts as an inhibitory neurotransmitter – meaning that it selectively blocks certain nerve impulses. Every function in the body that is started in the body must be stopped somehow, and in the brain it is the role of GABA to halt normal brain activity at times. GABA, concentrated in the hypothalamus region of the brain, is known to play a role in the overall functioning of the pituitary gland – regulating growth hormone synthesis, sleep cycles, body temperature, among many other vital functions.
GABA is found in limited quatity in some Alternative Medcine tinnitus therapies in response to the research report of Drs. Abraham Shulman, Arnold Strashun and Barbara Goldstein published in The International Tinnitus Journal, Volume 8, Number 1, 2002. under the title, "GABA-Benzodiazepine-Chloride Receptor-Targeted Therapy for Tinnitus Control." This paper documented a central pathway in the brain through which all tinnitus symptoms must travel, called the GABA-benzodiazepine-chloride receptor of the medial temporal lobe system. This paper supports the existance of a final common pathway for all clinical types of tinnitus.
GABA was also found to be effective in treatment of tinnitus in research done at the University of Brazil in the 1990s.
