Attempts at new tinnitus drugs

There are some drugs that did not work out in medical attempts to cure tinnitus ear problem. One of these new tinnitus drugs was lidocaine, which works in eliminating the problem but must be given intravenously and in high doses and only has a brief duration of action. It also has very bad side effects and, worst of all, exacerbates ear noise in some subjects. Other potential remedies for tinnitus from the lidocaine family, like tocainide, flecainide and mexiletine caused adverse drug effects for about seventy percent of research participants, causing a high dropout rate of about fifty percent.

Research using antidepressants as a remedy for tinnitus treatment has begun, but as of yet the results are inconclusive. Hopes are high, however, because of the similar neurological phenomena at work, with special similarities to pain syndromes treated by tricyclic antidepressants.

Campral tested with other remedies for tinnitus

Campral, a drug used to help alcoholics stay dry, was used in a fifty patient study in Brazil. One of many new tinnitus drugs being tested, results are positive so far, but some weaknesses have been found in the study's data. More studies are needed to decide if this can be added to the potential remedies for tinnitus.

Because of the inconclusive nature of all of these studies, many clinicians have turned to alternative methods in dealing with constant ear noise.
